“Garden Snake” कविता में एक छोटे और हानिरहित बाग़ के साँप का वर्णन किया गया है। कवि ने जब पहली बार साँप को देखा तो डरकर भाग गया, क्योंकि सामान्यतः लोग मानते हैं कि सभी साँप ख़तरनाक होते हैं। लेकिन कवि की माँ उसे समझाती हैं कि सभी साँप ख़तरनाक नहीं होते, और यह बाग़ का साँप तो बिल्कुल हानिरहित है। यह केवल कीड़े-मकौड़ों को खाकर अपना पेट भरता है। इसलिए जब कवि साँप को घास में रेंगते हुए देखता है, तो अब वह डरे बिना एक ओर खड़ा हो जाता है और साँप को जाने देता है, यह सोचते हुए कि यह केवल एक साधारण बाग़ का साँप है, जिसमें डरने की कोई बात नहीं।

Have you ever seen a snake fighting a mongoose, or
क्या आपने कभी एक साँप को नेवले से लड़ते हुए देखा है, या
getting into a hole, or swimming in the river?
गड़हे में जाते हुए, या नदी में तैरते हुए?
Everyone, almost everyone, believes that snakes are dangerous.
हर कोई, लगभग हर कोई, मानता है कि साँप खतरनाक होते हैं।
Some are, most are not.
कुछ होते हैं, लेकिन अधिकांश नहीं होते।
Read this poem on a harmless garden snake.

I saw a snake and ran away…
मैंने एक साँप देखा और भाग गया…
Some snakes are dangerous, they say;

But mother says that kind is good,

And eats up insects for his food.
