A HERO
Swami is a nine-year-old boy, who lives in Malgudi village with his parents and grandmother. One day, his father was reading a newspaper.
स्वामी एक नौ वर्षीय लड़का है, जो अपने माता-पिता और दादी के साथ मालगुडी गाँव में रहता है। एक दिन उसके पिता अखबार पढ़ रहे थे।
Father : Swami listen to this, a news of the bravery of a village lad who, while returning home by the jungle path, came face to face with a tiger till some people came that way and killed the tiger.
After reading it through, father looked at Swami and asked, “What do you say to that?”
पिताः स्वामी यह सुनो, एक गाँव के लड़के की बहादुरी की खबर, जो जंगल के रास्ते से घर लौटते समय एक बाघ के साथ आमने-सामने आया, जब तक कि कुछ लोग उस रास्ते आए और बाघ को मार डाला।

Swami : I think he must have been a very strong and grown up person, not at all a boy. How could a boy fight a tiger?

(Swami had always slept beside his granny which irritated his father.)
स्वामी हमेशा अपनी दादी के बगल में सोते थे जिससे उनके पिता नाराज हो जाते थे।

Swami : From the first of the next month I will sleep alone father.
स्वामीः अगले महीने की पहली तारीख से मैं अकेला सोऊंगा।
Father : No, you must do it from today.
पिताः नहीं, आपको आज से यह करना ही होगा।
In the evening, Swami went to his granny and slept under her blanket. His father came and said to him:
शाम को स्वामी अपनी दादी के पास गए और उनके कंबल के नीचे सो गए। उसके पिता ने आकर उससे कहाः
Father : Get up.

Granny : Why do you disturb him?

Father : Come with me.

Swami : Let me sleep in the hall please! Your office is very dusty and there may be scorpions behind your law books.

Father : No, you must learn not to be afraid of darkness. It is only a question of habit. You must cultivate good habits.

As the night advanced and the silence in the house deepened, Swami’s heart beat faster. He remembered all the stories of devils and ghosts he had heard in his life. He shut his eyes tight and covered himself with his blanket under the bench. He put his hand out to feel granny’s presence at his side, as it was his habit, but he only touched the wooden leg of the bench. He sweated with fright.
जैसे-जैसे रात बढ़ती गई और घर में सन्नाटा गहरा होता गया, स्वामी के दिल की धड़कन तेज होती गई। उन्होंने अपने जीवन में सुनी गई राक्षसों और भूतों की सभी कहानियों को याद किया। उन्होंने अपनी आँखें कसकर बंद कर लीं और बेंच के नीचे अपने कंबल से खुद को ढक लिया। उन्होंने दादी की उपस्थिति को महसूस करने के लिए अपना हाथ बाहर रखा, क्योंकि यह उनकी आदत थी, लेकिन उन्होंने केवल बेंच के लकड़ी के पैर को छुआ। उसे डर से पसीना आ गया।

Swami moved to the edge of the bench. He stared into the darkness. Something was moving down. As it came nearer, thinking it is a ghost, he crawled out from under the bench and hugged it with all his might. He used his teeth on it like a weapon. The creature yelled out in pain.

In a moment his father, the cook, and a servant came in carrying a light. All the three fell on the burglar who lay amidst the furniture with a bleeding ankle. Father called the police. The police was grateful to Swami as he had caught the notorious thief.The next day in the school, Swami’s classmates congratulated him and looked at him with respect. The headmaster said that Swami was a true scout. The news of his bravery was also published in Malgudi Times.
कुछ ही देर में उसके पिता, रसोइया और एक नौकर रोशनी लेकर अंदर आए। तीनों चोर पर गिर गए जो फर्नीचर के बीच खून से लथपथ टखने के साथ लेटा हुआ था। पिता ने पुलिस को फोन किया। पुलिस स्वामी की आभारी थी क्योंकि उन्होंने कुख्यात चोर को पकड़ लिया था।अगले दिन स्कूल में स्वामी के सहपाठियों ने उन्हें बधाई दी और सम्मान के साथ उनकी ओर देखा। प्रधानाध्यापक ने कहा कि स्वामी एक सच्चे स्काउट थे। उनकी बहादुरी की खबर मालगुडी टाइम्स में भी प्रकाशित हुई थी।
